Hi! I am a researcher and mentor.
In general I am interested in using cutting-edge technology and advanced analytics for biodiversity conservation and for improving fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. More specifically, my research has mainly focused on understanding the processes related to marine population dynamics, investigating the complex mechanisms driving the distribution of organisms and the evolutionary aspects of adaptation.
I am currently working at MARE and the University of Coimbra and I am also an adjunct researcher at James Cook University. I am an associate editor of Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries.
I really enjoy mentoring and I am a volunteer at two fantastic projects: Cartas com Ciência and As Raparigas do Código.

I completed a BSc in Biology at University of Aveiro in 2008, a MSc in Coastal and Oceanic Systems at Federal University of Paraná in 2011 and a PhD in Marine Biology at Victoria University of Wellington in 2015.
For my PhD I developed genetic tools for assessing population connectivity of the New Zealand scallop. I also used these tools to test how the environment shapes the genetic structure and diversity of populations and how ocean currents can influence source-sink dynamics in an important coastal fishery. From 2015 to 2017 I worked at University of Helsinki as a Postdoctoral Researcher where I studied the genetic architecture of morphological traits in passerine birds. In 2017 I joined James Cook University and the MarineOmics lab as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow where I worked on several projects applying genomic tools to fisheries, aquaculture and conservation. Since 2021, I have been collaborating with the Sustainable Inland Fisheries group on using machine learning models to automatically identify fish species and sizes from images. |
