PhD position available in the EU Horizon Europe project REDUCE (deadline April 2024)
A fully funded PhD position is available at the Department of Life Sciences at University of Coimbra to start as soon as possible.
This is an industrially focused PhD project where the student will work at the company DataFish and will be enrolled at the University of Coimbra. Annual salary will be 23.000€ (before tax).
Context And Mission
This PhD will be in the context of the EU Horizon 2030 “REDUCE” project: "Reducing bycatch of threatened megafauna in the East Central Atlantic" which will be concluded in December 2027.
The PhD project covers aspects of 1) electronic monitoring systems (EMS) database optimization, 2) machine learning model-assisted tagging of bycatch events from EMS to accelerate the labelling of EMS images, 3) deep learning model development for bycatch (megafauna) species detection and classification from images, 4) combining deep learning (DL) models for bycatch estimation and 5) comparative analysis of DL models versus fisheries observers’ data.
Admission Requirements
To apply for this position, applicants must comply with the following requirements:
• Have a Bachelor and/or Master Degree in the areas of Biology, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, or similar areas.
• Be familiar with R, Python, Matlab, or related.
• Be familiar with or able to learn current AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch in the context of HPC.
• Be committed to personal development and can demonstrate to be autodidactic and have organising, problem-solving, and interaction skills.
• Language proficiency in English.
Submission of applications
Applications should be sent via email in one single PDF to [email protected] and include:
(i) a cover letter highlighting their interest in the position.
(ii) curriculum vitae.
(iii) transcript of BSc and MSc studies.
(iv) the names and contact (e-mail) of two academic referees.
Deadline for submission: Open until Filled
Evaluation Criteria
The evaluation will be based on the merit of the candidate and an interview. All admitted applications will be ranked according to the weighted average of the score obtained on a scale of 0-100 in each of the following evaluation criteria:
Criterion A - Curriculum Assessment, with a weight of 75%;
- Sub-criterion A1 - with a weight of 40%; Academic Path (which reflects the classification of academic degrees of Bachelor + Master or Integrated Master. If the classification is qualitative, it will be converted in accordance with the table of the University of Coimbra, into a quantitative classification). For the purposes of applying this sub-criterion, the following is considered: The final average of "degree + master's", in a pre- or post-Bologna course, results from the simple arithmetic average of the final grade obtained in the 1st cycle and the final grade obtained in the 2nd cycle (Masters). In the case of integrated master's degrees awarded by institutions that do not issue certificates with a breakdown of the final classifications of the 1st and 2nd cycles, the final classification entered in the degree certificate after completion of the study cycle is considered. In the case of an integrated master's certificate and a pre-Bologna or 2nd cycle master's certificate, the final classification of the integrated master's will be considered;
- Sub-criterion A2 - Personal Curriculum (which reflects the scientific, professional and academic path, (25%) + Motivation Letters (5%) and Recommendation (5%), with a total weight of 35%;
Criterion B – Interview, with a weight of 25%;
Subcriterion B1 - Demonstration of knowledge in the proposed research area, with a weight of 20%
Sub-criterion B2 – Demonstration of knowledge of the English language, with a weight of 5%.
