Below is a list of key publications and a short description.

  • Silva CNS, Dainys J, Simmons S, Vienožinskis V, Audzijonyte A (2022) A scalable open-source framework for machine learning based image collection, annotation and classification: a case study for automatic fish species identification. Sustainability.14 (21), 14324.

This study aimed to facilitate the use of AI and computer vision tools for recreational and small-scale
fisheries research and management by presenting a scalable user-friendly AI framework to develop fish species
identification models. The framework can be found on GitHub.

  • Silva CNS, Young EF, Murphy NP, Bell JJ, Green BS, Morley SA, Duhamel G, Cockcroft AC, Strugnell JM (2021) Climatic change drives dynamic source–sink relationships in marine species with high dispersal potential. Ecology and Evolution, 11(6):2535-2550.

This study combined multidisciplinary tools (genetic and oceanographic modelling) to assess rock lobsters (J. tristani and J. paulensis) population dynamics and inter-oceans connectivity. Findings have complex fisheries management implications as it shows that lobsters’ future distribution might shift south with future increasing temperatures.

  • Silva CNS, Murphy NP, Bell JJ, Green BS, Duhamel G, Cockcroft AC, Hernández CE, Strugnell JM (2021) Global drivers of recent diversification in a marine species complex. Molecular Ecology, 30(5):1223-1236.

This was the first empirical study of genome-wide drivers of diversification that incorporates all extant species in a marine genus with long pelagic larval duration. It disclosed the relative effects of habitat and demographic processes on the recent divergence of rock lobsters.
